Director of Music
James Sherlock joined us as Director of Music in 2012, conducting the professional choir and playing the organ. He was previously Organist at St Bartholomew the Great in the City of London, after organ scholarships at Trinity College Cambridge and Winchester Cathedral. He also studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, the Georg Solti Accademia and the Franz Schubert Institut, winning top prizes at the Royal Overseas League Piano Competition and the ROSL award for accompanists, Das Lied International Song Competition, the BBC Performing Arts Trust, Award for Young Concert Artists and Gold Medallist at the Marcello Galanti International Organ Competition.
Alongside his activities at the church, he performs widely as both Conductor and Pianist in venues such as the Carnegie, Tchaikovsky and Forbidden City Concert Halls, the Concertgebouw and all the major halls in Great Britain. In the past season he made conducting debuts with the English Chamber Orchestra (who have visited Hampstead Parish Church) and BBC Concert Orchestra, and collaborated with many of today’s major artists including Dame Felicity Lott, KS Angelika Kirchschlager, Raphael Wallfisch and Dame Shirley Bassey, for whom he has acted as Musical Director. In 2015 he was selected by the London Symphony and Berlin Philharmonic Orchestras as the young British conductor to take part in their International Artists Academy in Berlin and Aix-en-Provence. He also plays the organ with the London Symphony and Philharmonic Orchestras and with Tenebrae Choir, appearing on numerous recordings with these ensembles.
