There has been a long tradition in Hampstead of local children singing in the choir at the Parish Church (see history). Today's Junior Choir consists of about 20 boys and girls, aged 8-18.
The choristers come to rehearse at the church every Thursday and Sunday in term-time. On Thursdays they rehearse from 5.30 - 7.00 pm and on the first Thursday of the month they sing Choral Evensong at 6.30 pm. On Sunday's the choristers come to rehearse at 9.00 am. and sing along with our professional adult choir at the 10.30 am Choral Eucharist, finishing about 12.00 noon.
Choristers benefit from a free musical education, which includes a thorough grounding in music theory and singing technique as well as regular and varied performing opportunities. They follow the Royal School of Church Musicís Voice for Life training scheme leading to RSCM Bronze, Silver and Gold awards RSCM. In April 2012 the Barney Rodgers Memorial Fund was established which offers to all choristers the opportunity of 1 to 1 singing tuition from our professional singing tutors who are members of the adult choir. Previous members of the choir have gone on to hold music scholarships at leading schools and choral scholarships at Oxbridge.
The Junior Choir also enjoys a lively social life with various events organised throughout the year. Past activities have included ice-skating and theatre trips, and Guy Fawkes Night fireworks and supper, as well as visits to cathedrals for choral services.
The Director of the Junior Choir is David Moore, MA FRCO, who is also Assistant Organist at the Parish Church. He is always very happy to hear potential choristers who would be asked to attend an informal audition. This involves singing a favourite song, tune or hymn of the candidateís choice, and some simple reading and aural tests. Parents who are interested in their child joining the choir should contact David - tel: 07742117236 email: firstname.lastname@example.org or the Vestry.
